If you’ve ever looked at a capsule wardrobe and thought, “That looks beautiful, but I’m not buying 25 new pieces just to start over,” you’re not alone. I, for one, am kind of done buying so many clothes.
The good news? A capsule wardrobe isn’t about replacing your closet or even becoming a minimalist. It’s about simplifying your wardrobe so getting dressed feels easier.
Although I’ve toyed around with the idea of a capsule wardrobe, I’ve never been interested in owning fewer clothes just for the sake of minimalism. I like options. I like pretty things. But I also like opening my closet and actually knowing what goes together.
And these days, I’m craving simplicity.
What surprised me most was realizing I already owned many of the building blocks of a capsule wardrobe—I just needed to see them differently.
So, if you’re like me, I hope this size-inclusive summer capsule inspires you to get dressed with less stress, make fewer impulse purchases, and feel more confident in what you wear. Instead of shopping for an entirely new wardrobe, use it as a blueprint. Start with the pieces you already own, then simply fill in the gaps.
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is ease.

WHAT’S IN THIS CAPSULE

What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is simply a collection of versatile pieces that mix and match effortlessly. I like to think of a capsule wardrobe as the foundation of my closet. It’s the starting point for almost every outfit I put together.
Think of pieces like:
- A few favorite tops
- A handful of bottoms
- One or two layering pieces
- Easy dresses
- Neutral shoes and accessories
The beauty of a capsule wardrobe is that nearly everything works together.Instead of staring at a closet full of clothes and feeling like you have nothing to wear, you’ll know that almost everything hanging there works together. Fewer random pieces. More outfit possibilities.
Why a Capsule Wardrobe Works Especially Well After 50
If you’re like me, as we get older, we become less interested in chasing trends and more interested in clothes that actually fit our lives.
A capsule wardrobe helps you:
Save Time
No more standing in front of your closet wondering what goes together. When your wardrobe is built around versatile pieces, getting dressed becomes so much easier.
Save Money
You stop buying random pieces that don’t coordinate with anything else. Having a plan allows you to shop more intentionally. This will help you lessen those impulse buys if you have a plan. When every new purchase has to work with the rest of your wardrobe, impulse buying naturally becomes less tempting.
Reduce Decision Fatigue
When everything works together, getting dressed becomes easy. And when every piece is something you love, that fits your body and your lifestyle, there will be fewer closet meltdowns. Wouldn’t that be nice?
Oh, and packing for a getaway becomes so much easier because you’ve already done the hard work.
Create a Signature Style
Rather than feeling scattered, your wardrobe begins to reflect who you are. Over time, you naturally begin keeping the pieces you reach for again and again and letting go of the ones you don’t.
Truth be told, I’m still refining mine. I can already tell it will become more casual for everyday life, and I may eventually end up with two mini capsules—one for elevated casual days and another for everyday wear.
It may sound strange that something as ordinary as getting dressed could have a spiritual impact, but that’s exactly what I’ve been discovering.
A More Personal Reason
Beyond the practical benefits, there’s also a personal reason this idea resonated with me.
Over the past year or so, I have felt God calling me to make more room for Him in my life. As I looked for areas where I could simplify, I realized how much mental energy I was spending on small, everyday decisions – especially what I wear. While fashion can be a wonderful form of self-expression, I found that fewer choices created more margin for the things that matter most to me.
While I’m still working on building, or shall I say, refining my capsule wardrobe, it hasn’t made me love fashion any less. If anything, it has helped me appreciate what I already own and shop more intentionally. It’s become a small reminder that contentment isn’t found in having endless options, but in making room for what truly deserves my attention.

Where Do I Start Building a Capsule Wardrobe?
One of the biggest mistakes women make is trying to copy someone else’s capsule exactly. Very few of us need to build a wardrobe from scratch—and that’s not really the point if our goal is simplicity.
Instead, use a capsule wardrobe as inspiration.
Start With a Color Palette You Already Love
Before we get into the how-to, I want you to do a little self-observation.
Ask yourself:
- Which colors do I wear repeatedly?
- Which outfits make me feel most like myself?
- What colors already dominate my closet?
I realize most capsule wardrobe graphics we see, including this one are pretty “bland” when it comes to color. My guess is probably because much like walking into a model home, the calm visual is appealing.
But, you’re building YOUR capsule wardrobe and it starts with what you LOVE to wear. The goal is never to strip your closet of personality but to build a foundation of collection where everything goes with everything else. If purple and yellow make up the bulk of your wardrobe, start there.
As a Sweet-Pea and Brown Summer season, I naturally gravitate toward soft blues, soft whites, French navy, and cool taupe or brown. I also have a smattering of pinks and grays throughout my closet but because my base includes core neutrals, they work. I could also easily add in some of the reds or brighter pinks in my summer season.
Think of someone else’s capsule wardrobe the way you’d think of a recipe. You don’t have to copy it exactly—you simply use it as a starting point and adjust it to suit your own tastes.
Start With a Color Palette You Already Love
Before we get into the how-to, I want you to do a little self-observation.
Ask yourself:
- Which colors do I wear repeatedly?
- Which outfits make me feel most like myself?
- What colors already dominate my closet?
If you’ve looked at capsule wardrobes online, you’ve probably noticed they all seem to use the same calm, neutral color palette. I suspect that’s because, much like walking through a beautifully staged model home, those soft colors feel peaceful and appealing.
But you’re not building their capsule wardrobe. You’re building yours.
The goal isn’t to strip your closet of personality.
It’s to create a foundation where everything works together. If purple and yellow make up the bulk of your wardrobe, start there. Once you have a strong foundation, adding a favorite accent color becomes much easier.
However, you should definitely find your core neutral colors, then supporting colors, an accent color and finish with some seasonally appropriate textures. In this capsule you’ll find:
Core Neutrals
- Soft white
- Ivory
- Cream
Supporting Colors
- Light denim blue
- Chambray
- Navy
Accent Color
- Cognac
Natural Summer Textures
- Raffia
- Straw
- Linen
You don’t need these exact colors.
Maybe yours are:
- Olive + ivory + tan
- Black + white + denim
- Soft pink + navy + cream
Choose what already feels authentic to you.
Shop Your Closet First
STOP! SPOT! Then, SPEND! 😉
Before adding a single item to cart, I challenge you to first pull everything from your closet you’ve been wearing on repeat for the last few weeks. My guess is, you’ll see a recurring color, as possibly style theme emerge.
Then, pull everything out that fits your chosen color palette and the season we’re currently in. You might be surprised to discover that you already own most of your capsule.
Lay everything on your bed and see what you have. Most women discover they already own 70–80% of a capsule wardrobe.
You may already have pieces in every core category. What you’re looking are timeless summer essentials that will fit into those categories. And what are those categories, you ask?

The Building Blocks of This Summer Capsule
Tops
- Basic tees in your core colors
- One or two feminine blouses (I love this trend with jean anytime of year.)
- A versatile button-down shirt
Bottoms
- Jeans One or two neutral pants Shorts (if you wear them) A casual skirt (optional)
Layers
- Cardigans
- Denim jackets
- Lightweight sweater
Dresses
- A shirt dress – super versatile
- A tank dress – even if you don’t want to show your arms, this can be a base layer even in summer
- A personality dress—maybe it’s floral, maybe it’s a maxi, maybe it’s romantic. Choose the one that makes you smile every time you put it on.
Shoes
- White sneakers
- Neutral sandals
- A casual/dressier flat
- A dressier sandal
Make every one of these pieces your own.
Maybe your everyday uniform is jeans and a pair of relaxed pull-on pants. You can certainly copy this capsule exactly if you want to, but that’s not really the point. The point is that YOU get to decide.
Identify the Gaps
Now, your capsule will look different than mine. But, compare your closet with this capsule and ask:
What Am I Missing?
Maybe you have great tops and shoes, but no versatile summer bottoms or dresses.
Those become your intentional purchases. Instead of buying ten random items, you buy two or three pieces that multiply your outfit options.
Layering Pieces
Don’t overlook your layering pieces. A lightweight cardigan, denim jacket, chambray shirt, or linen button-down can completely change an outfit while adding comfort and confidence. Personally, they also help me feel more comfortable by keeping my arms covered without adding too much warmth.
Accessories
Accessories are what give your capsule personality. Whether it’s a raffia tote, your favorite sandals, statement earrings, or a stack of bracelets, these finishing touches make every outfit feel like you.
A Few More Layering Pieces
I didn’t include these in the graphic simply because there wasn’t room, but they’re pieces I reach for all the time:
- Denim jacket
- Rain jacket
- Neutral sweatshirt or hoodie
How Many Pieces Should a Capsule Wardrobe Have?
There are no rules about how many pieces belong in a capsule wardrobe. This is your baby! You can have as few—or as many—pieces as you want.
If your goal is to simplify getting dressed, you can create far more outfits than most people realize with just:
- 10 tops
- 5 bottoms
- 3 layering pieces
That’s already dozens of outfit combinations before you even add dresses, accessories, or shoes.
The point isn’t owning more. What matters most is making better use of what you own.
Can You Add Stand Alone Pieces to Your Capsule Wardrobe?
Absolutely.
At the end of the day, it’s your wardrobe. The only question to ask yourself is how much inventory you’re willing to manage.
I like to think of a capsule wardrobe like a tree. The capsule is the trunk. Your wardrobe can branch out in lots of different directions, but the strongest branches are still connected to the trunk.
Don’t Worry About Exact Matches
I do not exactly own everything in this summer capsule wardrobe collage. For example, I don’t own the chambray dress in the upper left corner, however, I do have a shirt dress that has the same vibe.
One of the best things about capsule wardrobes is that they are flexible.
Maybe your capsule looks like this:
- No navy linen pants? You have navy ankle pants instead.
- No chambray dress? A blue floral dress gives you the same feeling.
Use the capsule as a guide, not a rulebook.

- White Dress – I recommended this dress and top to my friend; she bought it and LOVES IT as much as I do!
- Tie-waist Denim Shirt – Perfect if you don’t want to show your arms. ME!
- White Tee – I have these in multiple necklines and styles.
- Mary-Jane Espadrilles – These elevate and make every outfit cuter.
- Wedge Espadrilles – I wear these almost every Sunday!
- Loose Casual Chambray Pants; Linen Version pictured in full wardrobe graphic
My Hope For You
The beauty of a capsule wardrobe isn’t the number of pieces. It’s the freedom it creates.
I hope you’ll
- Start with colors you already love.
- Shop your closet before adding new pieces.
- Fill in only the missing pieces.
Once you’ve discovered your favorite everyday style and settled on a color palette you love, creating capsules for other seasons becomes much easier.
And remember: the best capsule wardrobe isn’t the one that looks exactly like someone else’s. It’s the one that makes getting dressed feel effortless in your real life.
At this stage of life, I’m less interested in chasing trends and more interested in making my wardrobe work for me.
A capsule wardrobe isn’t about restrictions. It’s about making it easier to get dressed without overthinking it, creating a little more mental space for the people and purposes that matter most.
Because it’s not that what you wear doesn’t matter. It’s just that there are things that matter so much more.
