HOW TO MAKE DIY CLEAN BUM SPRAY

Do you love a clean hiney? I do! In fact, I’m obsessed. And today I’m going to share how to make DIY clean bum spray which will save your plumbing and your pocketbook and your nether region will never feel better.

Yeah, since we broke the ice and talked about “crack sweat” last week, why not just go for the whole enchilada and get to the nitty-gritty of it all. BATHROOM WIPES and bum care!

Call it what you will, clean bum spray, toilet paper spray, butt-wipe spray, my tried and tested recipe for this alternative to flushable wipes will save you BIG! Compared to this $15 version, you can make your own clean bum spray and double the amount for less than $5!

SAVE YOUR SEWER

I’m not an overly “green” person but I definitely have some sensitive plumbing here in the Cedar Palace and want to take special care of that. Couple that with sensitive private parts and you’ll know why I started seeking out recipes to make an alternative to those so-called “flushable” wipes. Plus those things are crazy expensive.

WHEN FLUSHABLE DOESN’T ACTUALLY MEAN FLUSHABLE

While doing some research, I found out that those flushable wipes we buy can really hose up not only residential septic systems, but they are also not good for our municipality’s sewer system. We really shouldn’t be flushing anything other than our bodily waste and toilet paper.

But we all know that sometimes toilet tissue alone doesn’t cut it and we want to feel fresh without hopping in the shower after every BM.

BUT, I really LOVE my personal wipes so I needed another solution.

GENTLE ENOUGH FOR A BABY’S BOTTOM

When I set out to make my own personal “butt-wipe” spraythat’s what I really call it in real life, I tried several recipes before I came up with my own version.

It’s a combination of one I found for babies and one for adults, so this clean bum spray is not only effective, it’s gentle enough for you to use on kids’ and baby’s bottoms.

My Littles sometimes ask for it when they have itchy or sore hinnies. They always seem to need help with this even though I have a bottle in each bathroom. 😉

I added a special ingredient for extra “slip” – my sister-in-law loves this addition – so it feels really good on your skin.

This DIY personal wipe spray is simple to make and you can make it one bottle at a time or in larger quantities so you have refills at the ready.

You can make it with or without essential oils but I suggest ONLY using lavender and/or tea tree oils as they are antibacterial and at least for me, have proven to be non-irritating to those sensitive private parts.

If you know you are allergic or sensitive to either oil, leave them out!

PLEASE NOTE Be sure to use a glass bottle if you are using essential oils as they can corrode plastics. And if making a bulk quantity and saving it in a plastic bottle, don’t add the essential oil until you put it in your spray bottle.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE CLEAN BUM SPRAY

Glass Spray Bottle (I use the 8 oz size) THESE are so elegant

Witch Hazel

Glycerin

Aloe Vera Gel

Fractionated Coconut Oil (the kind that does not solidify) This helps with the tissue “slip” right over our bottom.

Essential Oil – Lavender or Tea Tree (optional)

Small Funnel

Measuring cup for ounces (I LOVE this one for this recipe)

Label (If you don’t want to make your own, here’s where I ordered my custom apothecary style label – FYI It’s waterproof but not oilproof. Be sure to request the “No. 2” at the top because it’s so stinkin’ hilarious.) 😉

HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST TO MAKE?

Once you have your basic supplies, like the bottles, the cost of the ingredients to make 8 oz. the cleansing solution without essential oil is around $3.30**. If you add essential oil, 8-10 drops per bottle, the cost increases but I’d guess it the cost would be under $5.00 per 8 oz. bottle and around 63 cents an ounce.

Whether or not you use the oils, compared to this premade version, it’s budget-friendly.

** Cost calculated using brands linked at the time of this post.

HOW TO MAKE DIY CLEAN BUM SPRAY

This is so simple it hardly needs explanation because you simply add the ingredients to your bottle and shake to incorporate them.

The fractionated coconut oil is my “special” ingredient and I like to use 1 1/2 to 2 ounces so there’s no drag at all and it leaves things feeling nice and moisturized by not too “greasy”. However, I suggest you start with one ounce of coconut oil and decide if you need more after you use it for a time or two.

If I make it in bulk, I mix it in a larger measuring cup or bowl and transfer it to a larger bottle. I think I’m currently using an empty witch hazel bottle; just be certain to label it with a marker.

HOW TO USE

This personal cleansing spray is gentle enough to use on our fronts or backs, but I mostly use it for the hiney.

Gently shake the bottle before each use to incorporate the oil and liquids. Then spray on regular toilet tissue and wipe as normal.

A WORD ON TOILET PAPER & TOILET PAPER SPRAY

When we first got married, my hubs said no matter what we wouldn’t skimp on toilet tissue so I typically buy brand-name tissue that’s relatively “thick”. Using thinner tissue with this spray may result in a breakthrough situation if you know what I mean. Just sayin’!

LET ME KNOW IF YOU TRY IT

You can adjust the recipe to suit your preferences; try it with and without the essential oil or try skipping the aloe or the glycerin and double the other. However, the essential ingredients are witch hazel for cleansing and coconut oil for slip.

However, definitely come back and tell me what you think. I think you’ll thank me and your plumbing will thank you.

Instructions

  • In an 8 oz. glass spray bottle, using a small funnel, add all the ingredients. Replace the cap and shake to incorporate. (Use glass if you're using essential oils.)

Amazing! I had no idea such a product existed, and appreciate the detailed recipe and all the links. Now, I need to take a look at the quality of the large amount of Costco toilet paper in my possession and perhaps buy fancier paper just for my own use. I definitely plan to try the recipe. I am giving 5 stars for the terrific idea.

Yours was the first email I read this morning. It really cracked me up. Great post.

I’m glad you like it Gail. We all need a good laugh and a clean hiney.

The Costco paper is pretty good I think it mimmicks Charmin. And actually, before the pandemic, Aldi had the BEST TP around. My mom used to bring us a pack every time she visited. 🤣 But the quality of what they carry now is not good.

      Enjoy,
      Paula

Will it harm the spray is I dilute it a bit with distilled water? Thank you.

No, it will not harm anything. You can really okay with this recipe and make it your own. I use the witch hazel as the base because that was the first ingredient in my favorite no -irritating, but now discontinued, flushable wipes.

        Best,
        Paula

    Just a thought
Prior to having surgery on my thumbs that had me in a cast for 3 months I researched the easiest way to take care of my bathroom duties. It was a to have my husband install a simple bidet on my toilet. Purchased mine on Amazon. No extra plumbing required. Works like a charm uses water only.
As you get older and find it harder to reach those sensitive regions it will be a life changer. I wish I had it installed years ago when I had major back surgery and life was really complicated. Now after having my 2 hand done I would not be without my Bidet. Our neighbor put a really expensive one in with all the bells and whistles but my simple one does just as good a job (no complaints here)
Even my son has installed them on his toilets in his home.
    Use less toilets paper.

I agree, a bidet is lovely to have. My parents have an actual bidet that sits beside the toilet and has hot and cold water. My sister has the bidet toilet seats and only cold water. I worry that here in the north, the water works be brain-freeze cold. Is yours heated? I know those that have heated water are very pricey and have to have survival plumbing and/or electrical work done. I’m torn.

      Thanks,
      Paula

No mine is not heated and I live in Ontario. Canada . I find the cool water in the winter is not out of line at all. Refreshing yes. I have had it now through many a cold winter use. Do not find it a problem.

It was a good investment and now in my 70’s I wish I had one sooner. I don’t like to use a bathroom that doesn’t have a bidet, just don’t feel as clean. Who would have thought. We didn’t invest a lot in the plumbing it is simple but effective. We have 2 installed in the house currently one up and one down.

What kind of thumb surgery? I have arthritis in both thumbs and the doctor has said I need thumb replacement surgery. I trying to hold off because I don’t know many people who have had it. One said never again and she still has pain after 4 years. Another said it was a cake walk and he had no problems. That are the only 2 I know. You were very brave to have both done at once! I have had 28 surgeries …..some really bad ones. I did have a shoulder replaced. I look forward to Paula’s blog.

Thanks! I keep a spray bottle full of water in every bathroom. This seems to be a better alternative.
Where do you find the glycerin and fractionated coconut oil?
I’m sure I should know this!

I linked all the ingredients in the post Suzette. There’s a SHOP THE POST SECTION at the bottom of the page and also in the list of ingredients in the colored box, click on each ingredient and it will take you there. But, if you want to go to brick & mortar, the drug store has Witch hazel and may have glycerin and aloe. The fractionated coconut oil, glycerin, and aloe can definitely be found at health food stores.

      Good luck,
      Paula

Since you are getting down to the “nitty-gritty” fpr hinnies,,,,,another thing that annoys me is the summer the crack sweat. It leaves its mark on the toilet seat which then must be cleaned GRRR! I will be making your recipe. Thanks. Will save on washclothes!

Indeed! In my list on staying cool, I mention I love AntiMonkey Butt powder for helping to keep cracks dryer.

I am going to make this for myself in the new year! This is just what I’ve been looking for! I had a rectal resection ten years ago, and in spite of wipes, diaper cream, and a bidet, still have issues. My hiney often feels raw from excess wiping, due to the fact I have to go more often than most people ( my opening is smaller). Thank you so much for posting this!

I ordered every single ingredient right off “Shop This Post” – including the cute bottle labels – and now I have a bottle in each bathroom. Absolutely recommend! I wish I could remember how I stumbled across your post about this, because I’m quite certain I was not googling “clean bum,” LOL. Great stuff though, and I’m very glad I found your recipe!

I will never again use anything else but this!! I tried creams and gels of all kinds, adult & baby, wipes and nothing worked like this does. It takes a little getting used to the cold feel as you wipe, but woman does it work wonders. Two sprays on toilet tissue and your all good. I don’t have a rash in that area anymore. I’m now trying on my dog as she has bad giardia from swimming in a stagnant pond. I’ll let you know if it cures her too! Thanks for posting and saving my A _ _ !!!

😄 YES! It really cures “crack” problems. 😬 That uncomfortable adult diaper rash is the worst.

One note, I’m not a dog owner, but if you’re using essayist oil, make sure it’s animal safe. I thought I had heard lavender wasn’t good for dogs… but maybe that’s the rule the babies. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks for the review, it’s definitely saved my skin a time or two as well. 🥳

      Hugs,
      Paula

    Thank you for sharing.
I use baby oil and water sprayed on dry/clean baby wipes. About the same formula as your essential oil dose.
Have a small rubbish bin in bathroom with half filled with vinegar and water (1part vinegar to 4 parts water)
Toilet paper used for number 2’s.
dry wipes with spray for urine only and put in rubbish bin. Vinegar neutralises and they can be placed into the wash with the towels and also softens the towels.
Learnt all this from having my own babies before disposable nappies.
Use small amount of vinegar in every wash rather than softener – good for washing machine, environment and cheaper.

You’re welcome Mary. I hadn’t thought of using washable wipes.

I too use vinegar in every loaf. It also helps keep the new higher efficiency washers from getting stinky.

Brilliant! So pleased to have found this on FB. I’m from the UK and had been using a ready made preparation, but it’s no longer on the supermarket shelves. This is the perfect replacement, quick and easy to make and ‘does what it says on the tin’! I bought all my ingredients from an online beauty supplies website based in the UK.

Hey Paula! I’m excited to make this; every time I flush a “disposable wipe”, I see that video of a large backhoe reaching into the depths and pulling out a massive ball of them from a sewage blockage. 😳😖 I have almost everything I need…but I am also cheap and forewent the aloe gel because I actually have huge aloe plants in my backyard! Can you use fresh aloe? I plan on blending it with a hand blender. If you know anyone who has used it, let me know, please and thanks!

Hi Diane, I’m so excited for you to try it. I don’t know anyone who has use fresh aloe gel but I don’t see why not. You might be able to leave it out as well. I just like the soothing properties of aloe. Experiment and let me know how it goes.

      Best to you,
